How it works

Margin and markup answer different questions. Margin is profit as a share of the selling price. Markup is profit as a share of the cost. Enter what you paid and what you charge. The result shows profit in money, the margin percent, and the markup percent.

Margin = (price − cost) / price × 100. Markup = (price − cost) / cost × 100.

Frequently asked questions

Why are margin and markup different numbers?

They use different denominators. A ₹40 profit on a ₹200 price is a 20% margin and a 25% markup if the cost was ₹160.

Are taxes included?

Only if you included them in the cost and price you typed.
