How it works
Hashing turns text into a fixed fingerprint. SHA-256 is the useful default. SHA-1 is here for comparing old checksums, not for new passwords. The hash is hexadecimal. The same text always produces the same hash; you cannot reverse the hash to recover the text. An empty string has a real hash too.
